Author

Douglas, Rosalie
This book is the story of Rosalie Douglass journeys with her chakra animals through Personal Totem Pole Process. It is not written from a theoretical standpoint, as indeed Rosalie would have been well capable of doing. Rather, it consists of the very personal and moving descriptions of her own deep imagery journeys, her interactions with the Animals she met in her chakras and the deep and gentle wisdom which they shared with her.

In the book, you feel the closeness and intimacy of Rosalies work. All her animals have names. Meet Abel the Bald Eagle, Magna the Tarantula, Amelia the hawk among others. They interact with each other and with her in a way that is deeply moving and full of respect. You feel with her as she moves through the difficult places she encounters in herself as the animals work with her to free the Tiger from the Circus Cage, of the books title.

This is a book that took courage to write and to put into the public forum. If you want to understand the power of deep interactive imagery and especially the Personal Totem Pole Process from a personal stance, this book is for you.

The following is a description by Rosalie Douglas from the foreword to the book:

In the Spring of 1982 I presented the art therapy segment of a week long workshop on consciousness and creativity in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Dr. Eligio Stephen Gallegos, who also happens to be my brother, presented the visualization segment in which I took part.
At one session we were instructed to visualize ourselves as vehicles. I saw myself as a circus wagon, a brightly painted ornate cage in which a tiger paced and roared. The tiger seemed extremely fierce and aggressive. I believed that it symbolized frightening aggressive aspects of myself struggling to be free.
Dr. Gallegos continued to investigate various visualization techniques and developed the animal imagery process that has since been introduced all over the United States, Canada, and Europe: The Personal Totem Pole Process. In this process one concentrates on the seven chakra areas or power centers in the body and allows an animal image to form for each. These animals then interact with the subject and each other. I was introduced to this tool for personal growth in a later workshop.
Several years later, after months of regular animal imagery sessions, I understood that the tiger I thought so fierce was not the problem. The cage was the problem.
The brightly painted circus cage was the maze of elaborate defense mechanisms that I had erected to preserve my view of myself and of reality. Throughout my life I had been adding more paint and more gingerbread designs, distracting others from the reality inside, and worse, distorting the reality viewed from inside.
The story of this book is of the empowering process through which the circus cage wagon was dismantled and my inner awareness, the beautiful tiger, set free.
